Four phytoplankton cultures and their associated bacterial communities were incubated in replicate roller bottles (1.9 L) over 3-6 weeks under laboratory conditions. Bacterial dynamics in the culture bottles were measured and correlated with geochemical parameters to determine the role of bacterial activities on the formation of CDOM in the cultures (Kinsey et al., 2018, see below).\\r\\n\\r\\nThe data include bacterial cell counts during CDOM monoculture experiment. The particular MOCNESS system from which these CTD data came is one of three net systems. The MOCNESS-10 (with 10 m2 nets)carries 6 nets of 3.0-mm circular mesh which are opened and closed sequentially by commands through conducting cable from the surface (Wiebe et al., 1976). In all three systems, \\the underwater unit sends a data frame, comprised of temperature, depth, conductivity, net-frame angle, flow count, time, number of open net, and net opening/closing, to the deck unit in a compressed hexadecimal format every 2 seconds and from the deck unit to a microcomputer every 4 seconds... Temperature (to approximately 0.01 deg C) and conductivity are measured with SEABIRD sensors. Normally, a modified T.S.K.-flowmeter is used... Both the temperature and conductivity sensors and the flowmeter are mounted on top of the frame so that they face horizontally when the frame is at a towing angle of 45deg... Calculations of salinity (to approximately 0.01 o/oo S), potential temperature (theta), potential density (sigma), the oblique and vertical velocities of the net, and the approximate volume filtered by each net are made after each string of data has been received by the computer.\\ (Wiebe et al., 1985) In addition, data were collected from four other sensors attached to the frame: the Transmissometer, the Fluorometer, the Downwelling light sensor, and the Oxygen sensor. A SeaBird underwater pump was also included in the sensor suite.\n\ncdm_data_type = Other\nVARIABLES:\ndatatype\ncruiseid\nyear\nbrief_desc\ntow\nday_local\nmonth_local\nstation\nstation_std\nyrday_local (decimal day)\ntime_local (HHmm.m)\ndepth (m)\n... [2016]). Fluids were collected using isobaric\ngas-tight samplers [Seewald et al., 2002] prior to their transfer to the\nshipboard continuous culture system [Foustoukos and Perez-Rodriguez, 2015].\nHere, high-pressure incubations (250 bars) were conducted at mesophilic (30\n\\u00baC) and thermophilic (50 \\u00baC) conditions to constrain the function\nand metabolic rates of denitrifying and DNRA microbial communities residing at\nCrab Spa and Alvinella, respectively. To enhance the activity of nitrate-\nrespiring anaerobic bacteria, an NO3- (5 mm) and H2(aq) (1.30 mM)-enriched\nmedium was introduced in the high-pressure incubations under strictly\nanaerobic conditions. Dissolved HCO3- (7.3 mm, 13C labeled) was used as added\ncarbon source. Vent fluids were introduced at a flow rate of 0.042 mL/min,\nwhile growth medium was added at a rate of 0.0042 mL/min. The two sets of\nexperiments were performed for 356 (Crab Spa) and 50 hours (Alvinella). Direct\ncell counts were conducted by staining cells with 0.1% acridine orange and\ncounting them with a fluorescence microscope. 15N/14N isotopic analysis of the\nNO3-, NH4+ and biomass were conducted with a Thermo Scientific Delta VPlus\nmass spectrometer and CE Instruments NA 2500 series elemental analyzer (EA).\n \nReferences:\n \nFoustoukos, D., and I. However, it remains unknown whether any signals could enable larvae to navigate over large scales. We tested whether flow-induced larval behaviors vary with adults' physical environments using congeneric snail larvae from the wavy continental shelf (Tritia trivittata) and from turbulent inlets (Tritia obsoleta). This dataset includes observations of larvae in turbulence, in rotating flows dominated by vorticity or strain rates, and in rectilinear wave oscillations. Larval and water motion were observed using near-infrared particle image velocimetry (IR PIV), and analyses identified threshold signals causing larvae to change their direction or magnitude of propulsive force. The two species reacted similarly to turbulence but differently to waves, and their transport patterns would diverge in wavy, offshore regions. Wave-induced behaviors provide evidence that larvae may detect waves as both motions and sounds useful in navigation.\n\ncdm_data_type = Other\nVARIABLES:\nfile_name (unitless)\nlarval_stage (unitless)\nspecies (unitless)\nflow_tank (unitless)\ndirection (unitless)\nx (Longitude, centimeters (cm))\nz (centimeters (cm))\nuf (centimeters per second (cm/s))\nwf (centimeters per second (cm/s))\nub (centimeters per second (cm/s))\nwb (centimeters per second (cm/s))\nlarval_axial_rotation_ang (radians)\nlarval_propulsive_force (N)\npropulsion_direction (radians)\ndissipation_rate (m^2 s^-3)\nhorizontal_comp_of_vorticity (s^-1)\nacceleration (meters per second (m s^-2))\nstrain_rate (s^-1)\n | https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/info/bcodmo_dataset_739790/index.htmlTable | https://www.bco-dmo.org/dataset/739790![]() | https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/rss/bcodmo_dataset_739790.rss | https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/subscriptions/add.html?datasetID=bcodmo_dataset_739790&showErrors=false&email= | BCO-DMO | bcodmo_dataset_739790 |
