The EXPORTS field campaign in the subarctic North Pacific sampled an ecosystem characterized as high nutrient low chlorophyll (HNLC) due to low iron (Fe) levels that are primary controllers constraining phytoplankton utilization of other nutrients. It has been a paradigm in low Fe, HNLC systems that diatoms grow at elevated Si:C and Si:N ratios and should be efficiently exported as particles significantly enriched in Si relative to C. However, Fe limitation also alters diatoms species composition and the high Si demand imposed by low Fe can drive HNLC regions to Si limitation or Si/Fe co-limitation. Thus, the degree of Si and/or Fe stress in HNLC waters can all alter diatom taxonomic composition, the elemental composition of diatom cells, and the path cells follow through the food web ultimately altering diatom carbon export.

Within each ecosystem state examined in the EXPORTS program, nutrient biogeochemistry, diatom and phytoplankton community structure, and global diatom gene expression patterns (metatranscriptomics) are characterized in the lit ocean. Nutrient amendment experiments with tracer addition (14C, 32Si) are used to quantify the level of Si and Fe stress being experienced by the phytoplankton and to contextualize taxa-specific metatranscriptome responses for resolving gene expression profiles in the in situ communities.

cdm_data_type = Other
VARIABLES:
Cruise (unitless)
Date_Zulu (unitless)
Time_Zulu (unitless)
Event_num (unitless)
Activity (unitless)
Station (unitless)
Cast (unitless)
latitude (degrees_north)
longitude (degrees_east)
Rosette_Bottle (unitless)
depth (Target Depth, m)
pcnt_lo (unitless (percent))
... However, only a small fraction of seagrass production is directly consumed, and instead much of the secondary production is fueled by the detrital food web. Here, we study the roles of plant genetic diversity and grazer species diversity on detrital consumption in California eelgrass Zostera marina meadows. We used three common mesograzers—an amphipod, Ampithoe lacertosa, an isopod, Idotea resecata, and a polychaete, Platynereis bicanaliculata. In a series of five independent experiments, we manipulated grazer species diversity and number of eelgrass clones and measured the resulting detrital consumption. Under monospecific grazer assemblages, plant genetic identity but not diversity influenced detritus consumption. However, more realistic, diverse mesoconsumer communities combined with high plant-detrital genotypic diversity resulted in greater consumption and grazer survival. These data are illustrated in figures 4 and 5 Reynolds et al., 2017 (DOI:10.1111/oik.04471).

cdm_data_type = Other
VARIABLES:
Consumer (unitless)
Number_of_genotypes (unitless)
Feeding_rate_mg_day (milligrams per day)
experiment (unitless)
https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/metadata/iso19115/xml/bcodmo_dataset_715422_iso19115.xml https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/info/bcodmo_dataset_715422/index.htmlTable https://www.bco-dmo.org/dataset/715422 (external link) https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/rss/bcodmo_dataset_715422.rss https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/subscriptions/add.html?datasetID=bcodmo_dataset_715422&showErrors=false&email= BCO-DMO bcodmo_dataset_715422

The difference with that dataset, is that here we present all the CTD casts for each cruise, the CTD profiles are single (not composite), and the salinity and oxygen profiles were calibrated with in-situ measurements, but fluorescence was no calibrated.

cdm_data_type = Other
VARIABLES:
Cruise_no (unitless)
CruiseID (Cruise ID, unitless)
Leg (unitless)
StationID (Station ID, unitless)
Cast (unitless)
CastName (Cast Name, unitless)
latitude (degrees_north)
longitude (degrees_east)
LATITUDE (decimal_degrees)
LONGITUDE (decimal_degrees)
year_localT (Year Local T, unitless)
month_localT (Month Local T, unitless)
day_localT (Day Local T, unitless)
hour_localT (Hour Local T, unitless)
min_localT (Min Local T, unitless)
Date_Time_Local (unitless)
time (Date Time GMT, seconds since 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z)
... This dataset presents growth rates for Emiliania huxleyi thermal response curve across 12 temperatures from 8.5-28.6C.Global warming will be combined with predicted increases in thermal variability in the future surface ocean, but how temperature dynamics will affect phytoplankton biology and biogeochemistry is largely unknown. Here, we examine the responses of the globally important marine coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi to thermal variations at two frequencies (1 d and 2 d) at low (18.5 °C) and high (25.5 °C) mean temperatures. Elevated temperature and thermal variation decreased growth, calcification and physiological rates, both individually and interactively. The 1 d thermal variation frequencies were less inhibitory than 2 d variations under high temperatures, indicating that high-frequency thermal fluctuations may reduce heat-induced mortality and mitigate some impacts of extreme high-temperature events. Cellular elemental composition and calcification was significantly affected by both thermal variation treatments relative to each other and to the constant temperature controls. The negative effects of thermal variation on E. huxleyi growth rate and physiology are especially pronounced at high temperatures. These responses of the key marine calcifier E. huxleyi to warmer, more variable temperature regimes have potentially large implications for ocean productivity and marine biogeochemical cycles under a future changing climate.

cdm_data_type = Other
VARIABLES:
Temperature (degrees Celsius)
Growth_Rate (per day)
https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/metadata/iso19115/xml/bcodmo_dataset_782911_iso19115.xml https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/info/bcodmo_dataset_782911/index.htmlTable https://www.bco-dmo.org/dataset/782911 (external link) https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/rss/bcodmo_dataset_782911.rss https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/subscriptions/add.html?datasetID=bcodmo_dataset_782911&showErrors=false&email= BCO-DMO bcodmo_dataset_782911

However, only a small fraction of seagrass production is directly consumed, and instead much of the secondary production is fueled by the detrital food web. Here, we study how plant genotype influences detrital consumption. We used three common mesograzers—an amphipod, Ampithoe lacertosa, an isopod, Idotea resecata, and a polychaete, Platynereis bicanaliculata. Each grazer consumed eelgrass detritus at rates greater than live eelgrass or macroalgae. This detrital consumption, however, was not spread evenly over leaves shed from different eelgrass clones. Palatability and consumption varied because of genotype specific differences in leaf texture, secondary metabolites (phenolics), and nutritional quality (nitrogen). Further, detritus derived from some eelgrass genotypes was palatable to all grazers, while detritus from other genotypes was preferentially consumed by only one grazer species. These data are illustrated in figures 2 and 3 of Reynolds et al., 2017 (DOI:10.1111/oik.04471).

cdm_data_type = Other
VARIABLES:
Genotype (unitless)
Nitrogen_pcnt (percent (%))
Carbon_pcnt (percent (%))
Tear_g (grams (g))
Penetrate_g (grams (g))
Phenolic_pcnt (percent (%))
Isopod_feeding_rate_mg_day (milligrams per day (mg/day))
Amphipod_feeding_rate_mg_day (milligrams per day (mg/day))
Polychaete_feeding_rate_mg_day (milligrams per day (mg/day))
https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/metadata/iso19115/xml/bcodmo_dataset_714942_iso19115.xml https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/info/bcodmo_dataset_714942/index.htmlTable https://www.bco-dmo.org/dataset/714942 (external link) https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/rss/bcodmo_dataset_714942.rss https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/subscriptions/add.html?datasetID=bcodmo_dataset_714942&showErrors=false&email= BCO-DMO bcodmo_dataset_714942

Rising carbon dioxide emissions and anthropogenic nutrient input are expected to increase these pCO2 and DO cycles in severity and duration of acidification and hypoxia. How coastal marine organisms respond to natural pCO2 × DO variability and future climate change remains largely unknown. Here, we assess the impact of static and cycling pCO2 × DO conditions of various magnitudes and frequencies on early life survival and growth of an important coastal forage fish, Menidia menidia. Static low DO conditions severely decreased embryo survival, larval survival, time to 50% hatch, size at hatch and post-larval growth rates. Static elevated pCO2 did not affect most response traits, however, a synergistic negative effect did occur on embryo survival under hypoxic conditions (3.0 mg L-1). Cycling pCO2 × DO, however, reduced these negative effects of static conditions on all response traits with the magnitude of fluctuations influencing the extent of this reduction. This indicates that fluctuations in pCO2 and DO may benefit coastal organisms by providing periodic physiological refuge from stressful conditions, which could promote species adaptability to climate change.

cdm_data_type = Other
VARIABLES:
Experiment (unitless)
Treatment (unitless)
Cycling_pattern (unitless)
Tank_No (unitless)
Hatch_length (millimeters (mm))
Hatch_length_SE (millimeters (mm))
Mean_growth_rate (millimeters per day (mm day-1))
Mean_growth_rate_SE (millimeters per day (mm day-1))
https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/metadata/iso19115/xml/bcodmo_dataset_777130_iso19115.xml https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/info/bcodmo_dataset_777130/index.htmlTable https://www.bco-dmo.org/dataset/777130 (external link) https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/rss/bcodmo_dataset_777130.rss https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/subscriptions/add.html?datasetID=bcodmo_dataset_777130&showErrors=false&email= BCO-DMO bcodmo_dataset_777130

[2016]). Fluids were collected using isobaric
gas-tight samplers [Seewald et al., 2002] prior to their transfer to the
shipboard continuous culture system [Foustoukos and Perez-Rodriguez, 2015].
Here, high-pressure incubations (250 bars) were conducted at mesophilic (30
ºC) and thermophilic (50 ºC) conditions to constrain the function
and metabolic rates of denitrifying and DNRA microbial communities residing at
Crab Spa and Alvinella, respectively. To enhance the activity of nitrate-
respiring anaerobic bacteria, an NO3- (5 mm) and H2(aq) (1.30 mM)-enriched
medium was introduced in the high-pressure incubations under strictly
anaerobic conditions. Dissolved HCO3- (7.3 mm, 13C labeled) was used as added
carbon source. Vent fluids were introduced at a flow rate of 0.042 mL/min,
while growth medium was added at a rate of 0.0042 mL/min. The two sets of
experiments were performed for 356 (Crab Spa) and 50 hours (Alvinella). Direct
cell counts were conducted by staining cells with 0.1% acridine orange and
counting them with a fluorescence microscope. 15N/14N isotopic analysis of the
NO3-, NH4+ and biomass were conducted with a Thermo Scientific Delta VPlus
mass spectrometer and CE Instruments NA 2500 series elemental analyzer (EA).

References:

Foustoukos, D., and I. Juvenile rockfishes were collected from shallow rocky reef and kelp forest habitats at Stillwater Cove, central California (36˚ 34' N, 121˚ 56' W) during May-June of 2015. Newly settled copper (Sebastes caurinus) and blue (Sebastes mystinus) rockfish were reared in the laboratory under across a range of oxygen concentrations. Juvenile rockfishes were exposed to one of four dissolved oxygen treatment levels corresponding to conditions that currently occur or are predicted to occur in the future on the central California coast: 100% saturation (8.74 ± 0.03 mg O2 L-1), 68% saturation (6.00 ± 0.04 mg O2 L-1), 46% saturation (4.06 ± 0.04 mg O2 L-1), or 26% saturation (2.25 ± 0.05 mg O2 L-1), with two replicate tanks per treatment level. Behavior and physiological trials were conducted on each individual to test how each species responds to declining oxygen levels, including (1) escape response, (2) behavioral lateralization, (3) standard metabolic rate, (4) maximum metabolic rate, (5) aerobic scope, (6) pCrit (i.e., hypoxia tolerance test), and (7) ventilation rate. However, it remains unknown whether any signals could enable larvae to navigate over large scales. We tested whether flow-induced larval behaviors vary with adults' physical environments using congeneric snail larvae from the wavy continental shelf (Tritia trivittata) and from turbulent inlets (Tritia obsoleta). This dataset includes observations of larvae in turbulence, in rotating flows dominated by vorticity or strain rates, and in rectilinear wave oscillations. Larval and water motion were observed using near-infrared particle image velocimetry (IR PIV), and analyses identified threshold signals causing larvae to change their direction or magnitude of propulsive force. The two species reacted similarly to turbulence but differently to waves, and their transport patterns would diverge in wavy, offshore regions. Wave-induced behaviors provide evidence that larvae may detect waves as both motions and sounds useful in navigation.

cdm_data_type = Other
VARIABLES:
file_name (unitless)
larval_stage (unitless)
species (unitless)
flow_tank (unitless)
direction (unitless)
x (Longitude, centimeters (cm))
z (centimeters (cm))
uf (centimeters per second (cm/s))
wf (centimeters per second (cm/s))
ub (centimeters per second (cm/s))
wb (centimeters per second (cm/s))
larval_axial_rotation_ang (radians)
larval_propulsive_force (N)
propulsion_direction (radians)
dissipation_rate (m^2 s^-3)
horizontal_comp_of_vorticity (s^-1)
acceleration (meters per second (m s^-2))
strain_rate (s^-1)
https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/metadata/iso19115/xml/bcodmo_dataset_739790_iso19115.xml https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/info/bcodmo_dataset_739790/index.htmlTable https://www.bco-dmo.org/dataset/739790 (external link) https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/rss/bcodmo_dataset_739790.rss https://erddap.bco-dmo.org/erddap/subscriptions/add.html?datasetID=bcodmo_dataset_739790&showErrors=false&email= BCO-DMO bcodmo_dataset_739790
