| log in | [Amazon isotopes POC CN] - Radiocarbon, stable carbon isotope and C/N composition of Amazon River particulate organic carbon (POC) from samples collected aboard the R/V Mirage in May of 2023 (Collaborative Research: What Happens to Terrestrial Organic Matter in the Ocean? Solving the Mystery Behind an Iconic Question) | This dataset contains 48 samples of particulate organic carbon collected from the lower Amazon River from May 4th-10th, 2023. The tabulated data include sample number, date, latitude, longitude, sample type, fraction modern radiocarbon (Fm), Δ14C, δ13C, and molar C/N ratio for suspended sediment, bedload, and bank/flood-deposit samples. Sampling was conducted at discrete sites along the lower Amazon mainstem and nearby depositional environments, so spatial coverage is variable rather than uniform. Samples were collected in the field and analyzed to determine radiocarbon content, stable carbon isotopic composition, and elemental stoichiometry in order to evaluate the sources, transport pathways, and age of riverine organic carbon. The dataset will be useful to investigators studying carbon cycling, sediment dynamics, and organic matter provenance in large tropical river systems, and it may contribute to broader studies of land-to-ocean carbon transfer. The data were collected and interpreted by the study investigators.\n\ncdm_data_type = Other\nVARIABLES:\nsample_number (unitless)\ndate (units)\nlatitude (degrees_north)\nlongitude (degrees_east)\nsample_type (unitless)\ndepth (m)\nFm (unitless)\nD14C (per mil (‰))\nd13C (per mil (‰))\nC_N (unitless)\n | BCO-DMO | bcodmo_dataset_1002805_v1 | ||||||||||||

(Collaborative Research: Investigations into microbially mediated ecological diversification in sponges) | Marine sponges host diverse communities of microbial symbionts that expand the metabolic capabilities of their host, but the abundance and structure of these communities is highly variable across sponge species. Specificity in these interactions may fuel host niche partitioning on crowded coral reefs by allowing individual sponge species to exploit unique sources of carbon and nitrogen, but this hypothesis is yet to be tested. Given the presence of high sponge biomass and the coexistence of diverse sponge species, the Caribbean Sea provides a unique system in which to investigate this hypothesis. To test for ecological divergence among sympatric Caribbean sponges and investigate whether these trends are mediated by microbial symbionts, we measured stable isotope (δ13C and δ15N) ratios and characterized the microbial community structure of sponge species at sites within four regions spanning a 1700 km latitudinal gradient. Samples were collected in 2013 and 2014 from reefs in Honduras, Belize, Panama, and the Florida Keys. There was a low (median of 8.2 %) overlap in the isotopic niches of sympatric species; in addition, host identity accounted for over 75% of the dissimilarity in both δ13C and δ15N values and microbiome community structure among individual samples within a site. There was also a strong phylogenetic signal in both δ15N values and microbial community diversity across host phylogeny, as well as a correlation between microbial community structure and variation in δ13C and δ15N values across samples. Together, this evidence supports a hypothesis of strong evolutionary selection for ecological divergence across sponge lineages and suggests that this divergence is at least partially mediated by associations with microbial symbionts.\n\ncdm_data_type = Other\nVARIABLES:\nSpecies_name (unitless)\nRegion_Country (unitless)\nlatitude (degrees_north)\nlongitude (degrees_east)\nMonth_and_year_of_collection (unitless)\nAve_depth_ft (feet)\nFreeman_Mean_Chla_Dry_wt (micrograms of chlorophyll a per gram of sponge tissue)\nHL_Chla (unitless)\nHMA_LMA (unitless)\n... Whole phytoplankton communities were collected from the Narragansett Bay Long-Term Plankton Time Series site and incubated at the in-situ temperature (22 degrees Celsius) and at deviations from that temperature (±4 degrees Celsius) with both macronutrient amendments (N, P, Si addition) and unamended controls. Phytoplankton growth, abundance, size structure, and elemental composition, as well as microzooplankton grazing rates were measured throughout the incubations. We used these data to test the association between bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana) host traits, blade-associated bacterial taxa and seawater environmental features across nine sites spanning more than 200 kilometers in Washington state. The data collection spans the outer coast site Tatoosh Island, at the entrance of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Data collection extended eastward to include sites within the Strait of Juan de Fuca and central and southern Puget Sound. Kelp traits and seawater features that were measured are contained within this dataset and include carbon fixation and DOC release, morphometrics of kelp, and nutrient content. Seawater features that were measured were nutrients, sea surface temperature, and salinity in the surrounding water column. Microbial community data based on 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing of kelp blades across all sites are archived at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) under BioProject number PRJNA1301461. Bacterial taxa showed differentiation among sites, and blade-associated bacterial densities were higher at the outer coast site compared with the most inland site. Yet, 11 bacterial genera were present in at least 80% of the samples; these taxa probably serve as core members of the N. luetkeana microbiome and show both positive and negative correlations with host health and environmental features. The data indicated strong interrelationships between kelp traits, seawater features and bacterial community composition with implications for the health of this highly productive foundational species in coastal ecosystems.
