Mid zone factorial experiments testing the interactive effects of predation (primarily by whelks), competition, and facilitation on colonizers of annually cleared plots in the mid zone at core sites (ACE = Annual Colonization Experiment). The long-term goal was to determine if whelk-prey interactions varied with environmental change. Effects (interaction strengths) of each interaction were determined at the end of each experiment (fall of each year) by calculating the difference between cage controls and predator exclusion cages (predation effect, presumably by whelks in this mid-intertidal zone), exclusion cages with mussels removed after settlement (competition effect, primarily of mussels on barnacles), and exclusion cages with barnacles removed (facilitation effect of barnacles on mussels). ACE is now in its 14th year, and results through 2023 show that strengths of each of these interaction types have varied in space and time. The relative importance of interactions on prey abundance varied among types; facilitation by barnacles on mussels was the strongest effect, followed by predation effect of whelks on sessile invertebrates, with weak effects of competition between sessile invertebrates. Barnacle and mussel colonization rate was quantified using replicated marked plots that are cleared each spring prior to initiation of heavy settlement and then photographed in fall (October-December) after abatement of settlement and growth.\n\ncdm_data_type = Other\nVARIABLES:\nPhotoID (unitless)\nPlotID (unitless)\nSurveyID (unitless)\nProjectCode (unitless)\nState (unitless)\nRegion (unitless)\n... See the \"Related Datasets\" section for size structure data.\n\nMass mortality from disease epidemics can challenge the resistance and resilience of populations and communities. Assessing the impacts of such events and their consequences is crucially dependent on long-term datasets In 2013-16, sea star wasting disease (SSWD) caused population-wide crashes of the archetypal keystone species, the sea star Pisaster ochraceus, along the North American west coast. We used two long-term datasets to assess the resilience of Pisaster populations to this perturbation in Oregon: a 16-year time series (2007-2023) of annual predation rate at 7 sites, and a 23-year time series (2001-2024) of density and size of Pisaster at 8 sites. In spring 2015, a novel and massive Pisaster recruitment event occurred at all sites, averaging 3.00 ± 0.57 recruits m-2 (± SE), an 8,100% increase compared to pre-SSWD. Elevated but spatiotemporally variable recruitment has persisted over the subsequent decade. Before SSWD, population size structure was relatively stable, consisting mostly of large adults with virtually no recruitment. After the outbreak, density, average size, and biomass density declined at nearly all sites, while SSWD persisted at low levels, averaging ~4% symptomatic per year. As of the current period (2021-2024), density and biomass density had recovered at all sites and often overshot prior levels, but average body size recovered at only 3 of 7 sites. However, the 2014 crash and the post-2014 recruitment events apparently destabilized the populations; density remains more variable among years at all but two sites.\n\ncdm_data_type = Other\nVARIABLES:\nTransectSurveyID (unitless)\nSurveyID (unitless)\nTransectID (unitless)\nGroupCode (unitless)\nRegion (unitless)\nCape (unitless)\nCapeNum (unitless)\nSiteCode_STARS (unitless)\n... Increasing variation in key ecological processes can signal impending state shifts in ecosystems. In a rocky intertidal meta-ecosystem consisting of three distinct regions spread across 260 km of the Oregon coast, we measured % cover of sessile spaceholders over time (2011-2024) in undisturbed and annually cleared plots. We show that annually cleared plots are characterized by communities that exhibit signs of increasing destabilization (loss of resilience) over the past decade despite persistent community states. In all cases, recovery rates slowed and became more variable over time. The conditions underlying these shifts appear to be external to the system, with thermal disruptions (e.g., marine heat waves, El Niño–Southern Oscillation) and shifts in ocean currents (e.g., upwelling) being the likely proximate drivers. Although this iconic ecosystem has long appeared resistant to stress, the evidence suggests that subtle destabilization has occurred over at least the last decade.\n\ncdm_data_type = Other\nVARIABLES:\nPhotoID (unitless)\nPlotID (unitless)\nProject (unitless)\nState (unitless)\nRegion (unitless)\nCape (unitless)\nSiteCode_STARS (unitless)\nSite (unitless)\nlatitude (degrees_north)\nlongitude (degrees_east)\nZone (unitless)\n...
