Rising carbon dioxide emissions and anthropogenic nutrient input are expected to increase these pCO2 and DO cycles in severity and duration of acidification and hypoxia. How coastal marine organisms respond to natural pCO2 \\u00d7 DO variability and future climate change remains largely unknown. Here, we assess the impact of static and cycling pCO2 \\u00d7 DO conditions of various magnitudes and frequencies on early life survival and growth of an important coastal forage fish, Menidia menidia. Static low DO conditions severely decreased embryo survival, larval survival, time to 50% hatch, size at hatch and post-larval growth rates. Static elevated pCO2 did not affect most response traits, however, a synergistic negative effect did occur on embryo survival under hypoxic conditions (3.0 mg L-1). Cycling pCO2 \\u00d7 DO, however, reduced these negative effects of static conditions on all response traits with the magnitude of fluctuations influencing the extent of this reduction. Global warming will be combined with predicted increases in thermal variability in the future surface ocean, but how temperature dynamics will affect phytoplankton biology and biogeochemistry is largely unknown. Here, we examine the responses of the globally important marine coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi to thermal variations at two frequencies (1 d and 2 d) at low (18.5 \\u00b0C) and high (25.5 \\u00b0C) mean temperatures. Elevated temperature and thermal variation decreased growth, calcification and physiological rates, both individually and interactively. The 1 d thermal variation frequencies were less inhibitory than 2 d variations under high temperatures, indicating that high-frequency thermal fluctuations may reduce heat-induced mortality and mitigate some impacts of extreme high-temperature events. Cellular elemental composition and calcification was significantly affected by both thermal variation treatments relative to each other and to the constant temperature controls. The negative effects of thermal variation on E. huxleyi growth rate and physiology are especially pronounced at high temperatures. A properly functioning thylakoid membrane is essential for optimal photosynthetic performance both in free-living and in hospite conditions. Here we analyze the thylakoid membrane melting points of 13  Symbiodinium strains from species in Clades B and A, grown at both control (26 \\u00b0C)  and high temperature (31 \\u00b0C). We observed a broad range of responses to thermal stress regardless of taxonomic rank. Our results support and augment a growing body of literature demonstrating that functional differences among Symbiodinium spp. are as distinct at lower taxonomic levels (i.e. interspecific) as they are among major clades. Picoeukaryotic phytoplankton are defined as red fluorescent cells larger than Prochlorococcus and less than 2-3 \\u00b5m in cell diameter. We only considered cell counts by flow cytometry. Samples covered a latitudinal range from 71.4\\u02daN to 66.1\\u02daS up to 400 m depth. Ancillary temperature and nitrate records were available for all but 2,334 and 6,530 observations, respectively, which we complemented with 1\\u00b0 monthly depth-dependent averages from the World Ocean Atlas (www.nodc.noaa.gov). To avoid analytical issues with detection limits, we imposed a minimum nitrate concentration of 0.01 \\u03bcM. We calculated surface PAR (8 d averaged, 0.047\\u00b0 grid cell) using SeaWiFS and MODIS observations. Downward PAR was estimated using the attenuation coefficient K\\u2084\\u2089\\u2080 from SeaWiFS and MODIS (https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov) and corrected for chlorophyll a\\u00b3\\u2070, and a minimum of 10\\u207b\\u00b3 E/m\\u00b2d was imposed. To study the binding mechanisms of radionuclides to organic moieties in colloidal organic matter (COM),marine colloids (1 kDa\\u20130.2 \\u03bcm) were isolated by cross-flow ultrafiltration from seawater of the west Pacific Ocean and the northern Gulf of Mexico. For the same purpose, exopolymeric substances (EPS) produced by laboratory cultured diatoms were collected as well. In our study areas, colloidal organic carbon (COC) concentrations ranged from 6.5 to 202 \\u03bcg-C/L in the Pacific Ocean, and were 808 \\u03bcg-C/L in the Gulf of Mexico. The COM compositions (organic carbon, organic nitrogen, proteins, total hydrolysable amino acids, total polysaccharides, uronic acids, hydroxamate siderophores, hydroquinone) were quantified to examine the relationships between partition coefficients (Kc) of five different radionuclides, 234Th, 233Pa, 210Pb, 210Po and 7Be, and concentration ratios to COC of individual chelating biomolecules that could potentially act as a chelating moiety. The range of partition coefficients (Kc, reported as logKc) of radionuclides between water and the different colloidal materials was 5.12 to 5.85 for 234Th, 5.19 to 6.01 for 233Pa, 4.21 to 4.85 for 210Pb, 4.87 to 5.68 for 210Po, and 4.49 to 4.92 for 7Be, similar to values previously reported for lab and field determinations under different particle concentrations. While any relationship obtained between Kc and abundance of specific moieties could not be taken as proving the existence of colloidal organic binding ligands for the different radionuclides, it could suggest possible organic moieties involved in the scavenging of these natural radionuclides. Together with results from isoelectric focusing of radiolabeled COM, we conclude that binding to different biomolecules is nuclide-specific, with colloidal hydroxamate siderophoric moieties being important for the binding of Th and Pa radionuclides. Hydroquinones/ quinone (HQ/Q) facilitated redox and chelation reactions seem to be involved in the binding of Pa and Be. However, the actual mechanisms are not clear. Individual amino acids, proteins, total polysaccharides and uronic acids did not yield significant relationships with logKc values of the different radionuclides.
