This dataset contains Acropora cervicornis buoyant weight measurements from different pH and temperature treatments. The experiments were conducted in tanks at Summerland Key, Florida (24.6616,-81.4538) with corals from a nursery located near Looe Key Reef (24.5636, -81.2786). Experiments were conducted from July to September of 2016.

[Global Bleaching and Environmental Data] - Bleaching and environmental data for global coral reef sites from 1980-2020 (Identifying coral reef 'bright spots' from the global 2015-2017 thermal-stress event) |
The coral bleaching data were composed of the Reef Check dataset (reefcheck.org), collected by a mixture of professional scientists (56%) and trained and certi\ufb01ed citizen-scientists (44%) using a standardized transect protocol. The dataset includes counts of the number of coral colonies showing bleaching (i.e., the percent of reef corals that were recorded as bleached), which was classi\ufb01ed as site-wide bleaching. We also examined the prevalence of coral bleaching per coral ecoregion (as de\ufb01ned by Veron et al. 2015). We used the global Coral Reef Temperature Anomaly Database (CoRTAD Version 6) from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (www.nodc.noaa.gov/sog/cortad/) to predict coral bleaching prevalence and intensity across reefs worldwide. All CoRTAD variables were weekly data provided on a grid cell basis, of ~4km resolution, from 1982 to 2017(Sully 2019).

Compared to the other "Great Lakes" (Laurentian Great Lakes of North America and Lake Baikal of Russia) the African Great Lakes have remained widely unstudied. This serves as a substantial research gap within the limnological literature given the African Great Lakes contribute approximately 25% of all global, accessible freshwater. Lake Victoria of the African Great Lakes is notable for its large size - serving as the second largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area. Yet, Lake Victoria is also known for the prolific year-long cyanobacterial blooms that occur throughout her waters such as the Winam Gulf. These blooms are fueled by intense agricultural and anthropogenic development much like other freshwater harmful algal blooms. However, unlike other freshwater blooms such as those occurring in Lake Erie and Lake Taihhu - these cyanobacterial blooms have remained widely uncharacterized (especially using molecular techniques).
The central study area is the Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria, Kenya. This is a relatively shallow, hypereutrophic system that has various rivers serving as nutrient loading sources (such as the Sondu River). This dataset also contains opportunistic samples collected from a variety of riverine systems and Lakes Simbi and Naivasha.
Here, we present the biological, chemical and physical data corresponding to a two year metagenomic time series of the Winam Gulf, Lake Victoria. We further present the physiochemical data of eight outgroup samples including adjacent riverine systems and Lakes Simbi and Naivasha.

These files contain data that support an analysis of the effects of two major hurricanes on coral reefs that have been extensively studied for more than three decades. Major tropical storms are destructive phenomena with large effects on the community dynamics of multiple biomes. On coral reefs, their impacts have been described for decades, leading to the expectation that future storms should have effects similar to those recorded in the past. This expectation relies on the assumption that storm intensities will remain unchanged, and the impacted coral reef communities are similar to those of the recent past; neither assumption is correct. These data support a study quantifying the effects of two category five hurricanes on the reefs of St. John, US Virgin Islands, where 31 y of time-series analyses reveal chronic coral mortality, increasing macroalgal abundance, and five major hurricanes that caused acute coral mortality. Contextualized by these trends, the effects of the most recent storms, Hurricanes Irma and Maria (September 2017), on coral cover were modest. While mean absolute coral cover declined 1\u20134% depending on site, these effects were not statistically discernable. Following decades of increasing abundance of macroalgae, this functional group responded to the recent hurricanes with large increases in abundance on both absolute and relative scales. Decades of chronic mortality have changed the coral assemblages of St. John to create degraded communities that are resistant to severe storms.

This dataset is a summary table of the Heatwaves and Coral-Recovery Database (HeatCRD) introduced in van Woesik and Kratochwill (2024). The HeatCRD is the most comprehensive reference on coral recovery following marine heatwaves and other disturbances, encompassing 29,205 data records spanning 44 years from 12,266 sites, 83 countries, and 160 data sources. These data provide essential information to coral-reef scientists and managers to best guide coral-reef conservation efforts at both local and regional scales.
The dataset includes metadata for coral reef sampling events, such as site descriptions, geographical coordinates, depth, distance to shore, exposure, turbidity, coral cover percentages, MPA descriptions, temperature measurements, windspeed, and thermal stress indicators over 23 years.

These files contain data that support an analysis of the effects of two major hurricanes on coral reefs that have been extensively studied for more than three decades. Major tropical storms are destructive phenomena with large effects on the community dynamics of multiple biomes. On coral reefs, their impacts have been described for decades, leading to the expectation that future storms should have effects similar to those recorded in the past. This expectation relies on the assumption that storm intensities will remain unchanged, and the impacted coral reef communities are similar to those of the recent past; neither assumption is correct. These data support a study quantifying the effects of two category five hurricanes on the reefs of St. John, US Virgin Islands, where 31 y of time-series analyses reveal chronic coral mortality, increasing macroalgal abundance, and five major hurricanes that caused acute coral mortality. Contextualized by these trends, the effects of the most recent storms, Hurricanes Irma and Maria (September 2017), on coral cover were modest. While mean absolute coral cover declined 1\u20134% depending on site, these effects were not statistically discernable. Following decades of increasing abundance of macroalgae, this functional group responded to the recent hurricanes with large increases in abundance on both absolute and relative scales. Decades of chronic mortality have changed the coral assemblages of St. John to create degraded communities that are resistant to severe storms.

This dataset contains dates relevant to sea ice movement including dates of initial ice retreat, final ice retreat, ice minimum, general ice minimum, ice minimum for the west of McMurdo Sound, ice minimum for the east of McMurdo Sound, and refreeze start. It also includes the minimum distance to the ice edge from McMurdo Station. \r\n\r\nDates were derived from Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometers (MODIS) collected between 2003 and 2015 and Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer and Special Sensor Microwave Imager-family passive microwave sensors (SSM/I) imagery collected between 1978 and 2015.

[zooplankton biomass] - Zooplankton biomass and species composition and abundance in the southeastern Caribbean Sea (Cariaco Basin) from October 2001 – January 2017 collected by the CARIACO Ocean Time-Series Program (CARIACO Ocean Time-Series Program) |
The CARIACO Ocean Time-Series Program (formerly known as CArbon Retention In A Colored Ocean) started on November 1995 (CAR-001) and ended on January 2017 (CAR-232). Monthly cruises were conducted to the CARIACO station (10.50\u00b0 N, 64.67\u00b0 W) onboard the R/V Hermano Gin\u00e9s of the Fundaci\u00f3n La Salle de Ciencias Naturales de Venezuela. The program studied the relationship between surface primary production, physical forcing variables like the wind, and the settling flux of particulate carbon in the Cariaco Basin. This depression, located on the continental shelf of Venezuela, shows marked seasonal and interannual variation in hydrographic properties and primary production (carbon fixation rates by photosynthesis of planktonic algae).\r\n\r\nZooplankton sampling was done during each CARIACO time-series cruise from October 2001 to January 2017 (cruises CAR071 - CAR232). Oblique BONGO net tow samples from 200 m to the surface were analyzed to determine biomass (dry weight and ash content) and taxonomic composition. Empty values denote that a specific zooplankton group was not found at that cruise.

[Global Noble Gases] - A compilation of dissolved noble gas and N2/Ar ratio measurements collected from 1999-2016 in locations spanning the globe (Carbon Dioxide Dynamics in Mode Water of the North Atlantic Ocean ) |
Inert gases dissolved in the ocean are powerful tracers of the impact of physical processes on gases, particularly air-sea gas exchange (by both diffusive and bubble-meditated processes), temperature change, atmospheric pressure variation, mixing between different water masses, and ice processes. We have compiled a global ocean database of dissolved neon, argon, and krypton measurements, supplemented by helium, xenon, and nitrogen/argon (N2/Ar) ratios in some locations. Samples were collected on board multiple research cruises spanning the period 1999 through 2016 and analyzed by mass spectrometry at four different shore-based laboratories (University of Victoria, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, University of Washington, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography).
